Papa John’s Historical Narrative

The Papa John’s World Headquarters campus began construction in 1997 and completed in 2000.  The office portion consists of 140,000 square feet of office space and houses approximately 600 team members.

When the first plans were drawn, John Schnatter stated he wanted the building and grounds to make a statement - one of quality.  He insisted the campus grounds be open to the community, neighbors and all team members.  He wanted the building to last for his children and grandchildren.  Therefore he chose a brick and limestone exterior.  The building consists of 283,700 bricks, 2.2 million pounds of Bedford limestone and 500 tons of steel.  The approximate cost of construction, land and furnishings was $50,000,000. 

The campus grounds consist of 36 acres; 1200 trees, 15,000 flowers, 20,000 bushes and more than 30,000 ground cover plants were planted.  The north entrance has a double waterfall with two small lakes.  The water feature holds 1.8 million gallons of water.  The pump runs 365 days a year and will pump 11,000 gallons of water per minute over the falls.  All rocks used to construct the water feature and other areas on site were blasted out of the ground from this site.  An approximate 2 mile walking track weaves around the entire campus.

Much of the inspiration for the colors, interior design and materials for the building came from Tuscany, Italy.  John took a trip to Tuscany and was so impressed with the architecture and material wear, how great it looked even after thousands of years, that he wanted the same got his building.

The interior walls step in and out to give character and mock the row houses John saw in Italy.  All colors and materials were used for quality and longevity purposes.

The front guest entrance, which we call the “Hub” because it attaches the office with the Commissary and Promotions, is a 40’ x 60’ three story atrium open to a barrel vault ceiling.  It is approximately 22,000 sq feet.  The floating staircase was designed by John and constructed in Michigan.  It weighs 36,000 pounds and was delivered by two flatbed trucks then welded in place. The Hub is a great place to hold company parties and meetings which John calls a “rally in the alley”.

This campus houses Papa John’s Food Service (PJFS) also named Quality Control Center (QCC) and Promotions.  There are currently 10 Quality Control Centers located throughout the United States. 

The Promotions part of our business houses embroidery, graphics and distributions departments.  The building encompasses 25,000 square feet. 

The one building that is not attached to the main building is called Support Services.  It is approximately 42,000 sq feet and was completed in 1995.  It currently houses our Print group.
